Carpenter Update: Clears hurdle, faces more tests
Should we not count on Pujols either? His elbow supposedly could go at anytime. I think in reality most every player retires because of injuries. Few go out playing their best. [69 total replies]

What will Mo do this Winter?
[quote:e095f90cc9="Cardinal70"]Also realize there's a lot of money spent that we don't see in scouting other countries, etc. They offered quite a bit of bonus money to some players (in the DR? I'd have to look it up at Future Redbirds) recently.[/quote:e095f90cc9] I also forgot to wish you a happy 6 year anniversary! :D [79 total replies]

Brewers @ Cardinals, 8/27/2008
Sorry, forgot to add that I liked TLR's lineup last night with the exception of Izturis leading off. On the nights Skip gets a night off let's see what Lopez can do hitting 1st or 2nd. On last thing part 2........ I know we have slim chance at the playoffs VERY slim but until it's official I would really rather Danny Mac and Al stop with hitting leader updates! It would be nice if Albert wins his 2nd title but I don't want to hear about it every inning. I'm more concerned if the Cards had the lead when the game is over! [36 total replies]

Our Closer
[quote:dcee171997="chevyman58"][quote:dcee171997="DD16"] Glad you brought Franklin up. It seems to me that everytime he pitches of late it's always a struggle, I'm wondering if something is wrong.[/quote:dcee171997] Are you describing Franklin, or McClellan? McC is giving me the 'Izzys' last 5 times out.[/quote:dcee171997] True, true. BOTH Franklin and KMac have giving us all Tums moments. Seems like TLR hasn't been in any hurry to trot Franklin out there since he wanted to work on new pitches VS Chicago and when he is in there it's a struggle. [13 total replies]

Jaime Garcia to AAA, Josh Phelps called up
[quote:ab8ab4b814][b:ab8ab4b814]MR. PHELPS' MISSION [/b:ab8ab4b814] Before the game, La Russa jokingly told first baseman Josh Phelps, who starred this year at Class AAA Memphis, that he had been waiting for Phelps to hit 30 homers before the Cardinals would bring him up. Phelps arrived here Wednesday with 31 homers and 97 runs batted in. Lefthander Jaime Garcia, batted around in a couple of recent outings, including Tuesday, was optioned to Class AAA Memphis. The addition of the 30-year-old Phelps meant that for the first time this season, the Cardinals have 11 pitchers and 14 position players on their 25-man squad. Besides the righthanded bat off the bench of Phelps, who finished last season with Pittsburgh, the Cardinals are down to the configuration they would want for postseason purposes. If a club has 14 position players and 11 pitchers by Aug. 31, that is the configuration it will have for the start of any potential postseason series. La Russa said he was going to ask Memphis manager Chris Maloney if Phelps could play the outfield, inasmuch as there isn't much time at first base here with Albert Pujols on hand. Phelps said he had played the outfield one game at Memphis. "I think I did OK," he said. Phelps most likely will be a pinch hitter for the Cardinals. Last year, he was 10 for 39 (.256) with two homers and seven runs batted in while playing for the New York Yankees and Pittsburgh. For his career, Phelps, who has 64 big-league homers, is a .258 pinch hitter. OF Rick Ankiel Gets the Call
[quote:ac61dc5270][b:ac61dc5270]Ankiel still ailing[/b:ac61dc5270] By Rick Hummel ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 08/28/2008 Cardinals outfielder Rick Ankiel, bothered for a month with what has been diagnosed as a strained abdominal muscle, went to the bench against Milwaukee lefthander Manny Parra on Wednesday night, having gone four for his last 36. Ankiel says the ailment is more of a factor when he runs, but he hasn't been able to do much offensively lately, either, with just three homers and nine runs batted in this month. Manager Tony La Russa had expressed concern before Wednesday's game that the injury could be a more serious injury like the sports hernia for which Chris Duncan eventually had to have surgery last year. After taking early batting practice Wednesday, Ankiel went to a doctor to be checked before returning to the ballpark. As to the sports hernia prospect, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said, "I think that's been ruled out before. (The visit) was really a status check. There's been no change. The diagnosis is the same. That's not bad." September Call Ups.
[quote:2f1fb25cae="Cardinal70"]From what I understand on Motte, his fastball is good, but he doesn't really have much of a secondary pitch. And MLB hitters will time the fastball eventually. I think that's why he's been in Memphis, to work on something else.[/quote:2f1fb25cae] I've heard that as well, but surely he could've been more effective than Izzy and Franklin. There are quite a few relievers out there that can get by throwing nothing but fastballs, namely Kyle Farnsworth. I understand them wanting to get him some more time to work in AAA, as he was a catcher just two years ago. But with the state of our bullpen this season, I really think he could've contributed something to the team. But, hey, that's why Mozeliak, TLR, and Lunhow are professional baseball executives, and I'm just a struggling pre-med student. [34 total replies]

Quad Cities River Bandits (Low A)--2008
[b:a781267a27]BANDITS ELIMINATED FROM PLAYOFF CONTENTION[/b:a781267a27] [i:a781267a27] Smith drives in two more[/i:a781267a27] The Quad Cities River Bandits were officially knocked out of the 2008 playoff race on Wednesday night, failing to hold three separate one-run leads in a 4-3 loss to the Burlington Bees at Community Field. Quad Cities (32-33, 65-64) fell below .500 for the first time since July 3 and will miss the post-season for the first time since becoming a St. Louis Cardinals affiliate in 2005. Burlington (41-23, 71-62) was led offensively by Royals’ top prospect Mike Moustakas, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI while keying all three Bees rallies. After the two clubs traded blowout wins in the first two games of the series, they traded single runs in the early innings on Wednesday. Adron Chambers reached base in the top of the first on a single and an error, scoring on a two-out, broken bat single by Curt Smith to put Quad Cities on top. The Bees answered in similar fashion in the bottom half of the frame, as Johnny Giavotella doubled and crossed the plate on a base hit by Moustakas to even the score at 1-1. In the top of the third, the River Bandits jumped back on top. Tommy Pham opened the inning by beating out an infield single to third and Chambers followed with a drag bunt that was perfectly laid down the first base line for a hit. Pham then got a great read on a blooper by Francisco Rivera that dropped just in front of the center fielder, as the runner scored easily from second for a 2-1 lead. After Moustakas doubled and scored to tie the game in the fourth, Quad Cities recaptured the lead in the next half inning. In the middle of the rally once again, Chambers was hit by a pitch with one away and advanced to third on a bouncing ball single by Rivera. Smith then drove home Chambers for the second time, notching his seventh RBI through the first three games of the series with a sacrifice fly to left for a 3-2 advantage. But the Bees seemed to have an answer for everything Wednesday night, and they struck back with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth. Leadoff hitter David Lough drew a walk to get it started and Giavotella followed with a liner to right-center that bounced past Pham and turned into a run-scoring triple. On the very next pitch, Moustakas gave Burlington their first lead of the game with a broken bat grounder that snuck into center for a run-scoring single and a 4-3 advantage. That score...
